Standing Seam Cladding Dormer

Standing Seam Cladding Dormer in Anthracite Grey (RAL 7016)

Here, our expert manufacturers and installers built and implemented an aluminium standing seam cladding detail for a dormer – in other words, a ventilated roof extension where the vertical sides and roof are covered in metal panels joined by raised, interlocking folds.

Dormer details like this are very popular among loft conversions as they create a clean, contemporary solution that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also highly durable and weather-resistant.

Standing Seam Cladding Dormer: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What are the key components of standing seam cladding?

A standing seam cladding dormer detail is made up of:

  • Standing Seam Panels: These are usually long metal trays (in this case, made of aluminium) with vertical edges.
  • Concealed Fixings: Clips and fasteners are hidden beneath the raised seams, which not only lock the panels together, but also prevent leaks and allow the metal to expand or shrink in line with temperature changes.
  • Rear Ventilation: A small gap behind the aluminium panels that lets in air and keeps moisture at bay.
  • Junctions & Flashings: Special trim pieces seal the edges around windows, corners and the roof junction to keep out wind and rain.

2. Why choose aluminium for a dormer detail, rather than render, timber or zinc?

Aluminium is lightweight, naturally corrosion-resistant and doesn’t require any painting or resealing. Unlike render, it won’t crack, unlike timber it won’t rot and unlike zinc, it’s more cost-effective (with a similar finish left at the end).

3. What colour and finishes do you offer?
