Churches, being built from traditional materials and often unoccupied for long periods, are especially vulnerable to callous thieves who seek a quick buck from stealing the lead from the roof. One of the even sadder things is that the value of the weighed-in lead is nowhere near the vast cost of replacement and of the damage done by inrushing water whilst the building is unprotected from the rain. Also, lead is a highly toxic material, and worth avoiding for that reason too.
