Can You Replace Gutters Yourself?

We’ve spoken before about switching from plastic gutters to aluminium. But what you probably want to know is, can you replace gutters yourself? The answer is yes – you can. But it does require you to work from a height, so appropriate health and safety measures must be in place.

It does also require some prior DIY knowledge and experience, which is why we would always recommend enlisting professional help if you’re not sure, or you don’t have the necessary equipment to make your working environment safe. Not to mention, the process is vastly different depending on your roof type, whether you’re replacing your system with a plastic alternative, or you’re opting for sectional or seamless aluminium gutters. We’ve rounded up everything you need to know below.

How to Replace Gutters: DIY Gutter Replacement

Plastic Gutters

If you’re going down the route of DIY gutter replacement, plastic gutters are often fairly straightforward to remove yourself.

Important: When using a ladder, place the bottom quarter of its total height away from the base of the building on firm, flat ground. Before you climb up it, make sure it is not tilting left or right. If you’re using an extension ladder, at least 3 rungs should be overlapping to keep it stable. Always ask someone to stand at the bottom and hold the ladder for you.

You should always wear flat shoes with good grip and you should never lean over or reach out more than an arm’s length away. If possible, use scaffolding for added safety.

How to Remove Plastic Gutters

  1. Hammer a few large nails into your fascia board beneath one section of guttering at a time (at both ends) to hold it in place.
  2. Use a hacksaw to cut through the bolts joining your gutter section together.
  3. Tap the section out with a nail punch and hammer.
  4. Tie a rope around each end of your gutter section, break the joint(s) apart and unscrew the brackets holding the section to the fascia board.
  5. Use the ropes to carefully lower the section to the ground and repeat this process until all sections have been removed.
  6. Repair the fascia board by filling in the screw holes, stripping off any flaking finishes and repainting or re-staining it.

How Do Your Supply-Only Aluminium Guttering Services Work?

  1. Tell us the size of gutter lengths you require.
  2. You can either collect them from our unit in Hyde, or if the lengths are too big for you to transport, we can deliver them to your site for a small cost.

Do You Need Support with Gutter Installation?

Fitting aluminium gutters can be risky and complex. Seamless aluminium guttering is very light, but the process does require more precise mitre cutting and expansion joint placement, as well as important fascia load considerations.

Place the gutters unevenly and rainwater won’t flow properly, leading to unnecessary leaks and costly repairs. And if you don’t ensure the fascia board has enough support, your new gutters will sag, causing overflows and affecting your property’s structural integrity. Add to that the complexity of a heritage roofline or multi-story property, and the price of professional installation soon pays for itself.

How Much Does It Cost to Replace Gutters?

How much it costs to replace gutters can vary, often due to:

  • Quantity: The amount, measurements and specific size of gutter you need will directly influence the price.
  • Project size & complexity: The bigger and more complex your project is, the more resources and staff we will need to complete the job in a timely manner. E.g. a 2-bedroom, semi-detached house is likely to cost less than a 4-bedroom, detached house as there is less area to cover.
  • Distance from our offices: If your project is far away in comparison to our offices, part of the cost may be used to cover travel.

Despite aluminium being a superior material, our rates are very competitive. Quick and easy to install, keeping labour costs down, there are plenty of savings to be made in the overall lifespan of the installation.
