Churches, being built from traditional materials and often unoccupied for long periods, are especially vulnerable to callous thieves who seek a quick buck from stealing the lead from the roof. One of the even sadder things is that the value of the weighed-in lead is nowhere near the vast cost of replacement and of the damage done by inrushing water whilst the building is unprotected from the rain. Also, lead is a highly toxic material, and worth avoiding for that reason too.
There is an alternative to lead: aluminium flashings can be easily and specially made to fit all kinds of configurations and tricky corners. We even have a malleable version of aluminium for those particularly tight spots. And, of course, being an abundant metal, aluminium has little scrap value and is therefore of no interest to vandals and scrap thieves.
