a gutter with seasonal debris in it

Your Spring Gutter Inspection Checklist

Gutters change with the seasons, so it’s only right to carry out a quick gutter inspection when autumn transitions into winter, winter to spring, and so on.

To help you with your checks, we’ve put together a simple spring gutter inspection checklist which outlines a few things you should be looking out for this season. If you need more support, we would always recommend enlisting the help of a professional gutter inspection company.

1. Any Visual Clogs or Debris?

After long winter months, gutters quite often accumulate a range of seasonal debris, including leaves, twigs and sediment. From the ground, take a look up at your gutters. If you can see debris sticking out, it’s probably even worse on the inside.

Leaving your gutter system blocked can result in its flow capacity being exceeded – in other words, stockpiled debris = overflows in periods of heavy rainfall. This can mean water starts running down the sides of your building, instead of being channelled safely away from its foundations.

2. Check for Sagging Gutters

Gutters should be attached securely to the fascia board on your roofline. Take a look around your building and check if you can see any sections or areas of your gutter system pulling away.

If you notice any, this means there is a strain in the system being caused by the weight of trapped seasonal debris and backlogged water, which can get worse if left unaddressed.

3. Look Out for Signs of Water Damage

If rainwater isn’t being drained properly by your gutters, your building can start to show signs of this, just not always in the most obvious of ways. Things that may seem like minor wear and tear can mean bigger issues in the future, such as:

  • Stains on siding
  • Peeling paint
  • Rotting wood
  • Water marks near the foundations of your building

4. Any Loose or Leaking Seams?

This one will require ladders and may be best performed while it’s raining, but is well worth checking. The seams or sections in some types of unreliable sectional guttering can loosen or develop small leaks as rainwater has been left to deposit there over time. Taking a quick look during rainfall should help you identify whether there is a leak between the sections or not.

Even small drips can cause big problems if left unattended to. The best solution for this is to opt for Seamless Aluminium Guttering. With no joints, sections or seams in the running length, our popular system helps you protect your building against leaks and rainwater damage for decades to come.

5. Don’t Forget About Your Downpipes!

A reliable rainwater drainage system is never complete without a set of trusty downpipes to match. Next time it rains, take a quick look at where the water comes out from the pipes to see if it’s actually going down your drain, or pooling at the bottom of your building.

Significant pooling can cause soil erosion and structural issues over time. Always contact gutter experts for specialist support.

6. Is it Time to Switch to Seamless Aluminium Guttering?
